How to calculate the turkey roasting time for a low fat heart healthy delicious turkey.

The Roasting time for a Turkey does not have to be a challenge for home cooks. The amount of time that is involved will depend on the size of the bird that you have selected and whether you are roasting an unstuffed bird or have filled the hollow cavity with delicious homemade stuffing.

You can use this simple chart to help you determine the amount of Roasting time required. Even though this guide is very practical you should still use a meat thermometer to double check that this large bird has been properly cooked correctly. The thermometer should read 165 F at the center of the dressing and 180F at the thickest part of the bird's thigh.

Turkey Roasting Time:

Roasting times have been based on a 325 F oven.

Stuffed Unstuffed

6-8 pounds-3-3.5 hours 2.5 - 3 hours

8-12 pounds-3.5-4.5 hours 3 - 4 hours

12-16 pounds -4.5-5.5 hours 4 - 5 hours

16-20 pounds-5.5-6 hours 5 - 5-1/2 hours

20-24 pounds-6-6.5 hours 5- 5.5 hours

For a quick and easy low fat roast Turkey you can use this recipe;


* 10-12-pound turkey

* 1 onion, peeled and divided into 6 sections

* 1 half of an orange and ½ of a large lemon

* 1 teaspoon poultry seasoning

* 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil

* 8 sprigs of fresh rosemary; 8 sprigs of fresh thyme and 8 sprigs of fresh sage

* 1 teaspoon lemon pepper

* 1 teaspoon Greek seasoning

Cooking Directions

Set oven for 425 F

Remove giblets and neck interior of the bird's cavity

Rinse the bird thoroughly with cold water and pat dry

Rub the olive oil, lemon pepper and Greek seasoning onto the outer surface of the meat.

Squeeze some of the juice from the orange and lemon and rub the interior of the bird with this juice

Put citrus fruit and half of the herbs into the bird's cavity

Use kitchen twine to bind the legs together and 4 sprigs of each herb inside the bird's cavity.

Put the Turkey on a roasting rack, breast side up. Place rack in a roasting pan.

Put pan in oven and let it cook for 15 minutes at 425 degrees.

Lower the heat to 325 F. Baste the bird several times with pan juices as it roasts.

Cook for 3-4 hours. Use a meat thermometer to make sure that the temperature of the thigh meat is 180F.

Remove from oven and garnish with sliced oranges, lemons and fresh herbs prior to serving.
