Heavenly low fat homemade chocolate pie recipe for a special treat.Low fat recipes allow you to enjoy many of your favorite foods without guilt. These recipes include decadent chocolate desserts with a taste that is indescribably delicious.

When it comes to healthier eating most nutritionists will tell you that reducing the number of fat grams in your daily diet is one of the most important steps to consider taking.

Less fat means less danger for your cardiovascular system and a healthier, stronger heart can add years to your life. Reducing the fat in many of those standard recipes does not mean that you have to reduce the flavor profile. In fact many low fat recipes have flavors that even surpass the original dishes.

Here is a Homemade Chocolate Pie recipe that is sure to please any confessed ‘choc-a-holic'. If you do not tell anyone that this is a low fat dessert no one will guess your little ‘culinary secret'.

You need a low-fat pie crust and you can always buy one of the ready-made, graham cracker crusts at the store. There are even some (reduced fat) graham crusts on the shelves that shave a few more grams of fat from this dessert.

If you want to make a ‘reduced fat' pie crust it is easy to do.

Preheat the oven to 250F

Whip 5 egg whites for 1-2 minutes at medium-high speed.

Add 1 ¼ cup of Splenda and continue beating the egg whites for another 1-2 minutes.

Add 1 ½ teaspoons of pure vanilla extract and ¼ teaspoon of cream of tartar to the mixing bowl.

Beat the mixture until there is a glossy finish.

The appearance should be similar to that of a fine meringue.

Spray a glass pie plate with a spritz of PAM.

Spread the mixture in the pie plate and use a rubber spatula to even the sides and bottom out.

Reduce the oven temperature to 225F and place the dish in the oven to bake for 60-70 minutes.

Let the crust cool before adding the chocolate filling.

Directions for Homemade Chocolate Pie filling

Combine a small box of instant chocolate pudding mix with ½ cup of low-fat peanut butter.

Stir the mixture for 5 minutes.

Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, 2 tablespoons of chocolate syrup and an 8 ounce container of low-fat whipped topping. (You can omit the chocolate syrup if desired ).

Mix these ingredients together until smooth and spread the filling into the prepared pie crust of your choice.

You can chill this pie in the fridge for 4-6 hours before serving.

***Just before serving add maraschino cherries or fresh berries and mint leaves as edible garnish.
