Take for example most traditional apple Pie Recipes. These simple recipes are not only high in fat at 59 grams a serving but also high in calories too at somewhere around 500 a slice. But with a few simple changes, you can make the Best Apple pie imaginable with only a little over 200 calories and 2 grams of fat. To prove it here is the recipe.
Low Fat Apple Pie
This pie calls for the use of Phyllo dough instead of the standard piecrust and is baked in an 8"X8"X1 ½-inch square pan.
Homemade Apple Pie Recipes:
5-9"X14" sheets of phyllo dough gently separated and laid out ready to use.
5 large baking apples, cored, and thinly sliced
¼ Cup brown sugar (or brown sugar substitute)
2 teaspoons cinnamon
2 Tablespoons lemon Juice
1 Tablespoon cornstarch
¼ cup chopped walnuts (optional)
butter flavored cooking spray
Homemade Apple Pie Recipes:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Crust: You can either make the crust first or wait until the apple mixture is in the microwave to make the crust.
Coat the square baking pan with cooking spray. Take the first piece of phyllo dough and lay in the bottom of the pan, folding it to fit the bottom and press down. Then lightly spray the top of the dough with butter flavor cooking spray.
Lightly spray the next piece of phyllo dough and center it over the pan with the edges hanging over. Place the third piece of phyllo dough over the second (again spraying the dough)
Place the 4th and 5th pieces of phyllo dough in the same manner going in the opposite direction to form a cross. Gently press the 4 inside corners of the dough together and set aside.
Combine Apples, brown sugar, cinnamon lemon juice, cornstarch, (and walnuts) together in a large microwavable bowl until about half cooked. Then spoon into piecrust and gently fold the sides of the piecrust over the top of the apples. (cut some small slits in the top to allow the steam to escape.)
Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 20 to 25 minutes or until done. Cool and serve.
While phyllo dough is the perfect substitute for traditional piecrusts as it has little fat content, it is also extremely thin and can be difficult to work with. So use patients and care when working with this dough.
One of the things that makes this the Best Apple Pie Recipe for people who are watching their fat content is that there is absolutely no butter in this pie (which is where most of the fat comes from) and yet it has that traditional apple pie taste that people love.
