Most people love their pizza, never realizing that a small piece of pizza contains as many as 210 calories and is loaded with sodium and more saturated fat than you really need to consume.

However, with a little innovation, a few simple changes and the right ingredients you can turn that pizza into a satisfying and delicious heart healthy treat. Of course you are simply going to have to try these pizza treats to believe them so here are a couple simple heart healthy pizza recipes for you to try. Including making your own low sodium pizza sauce.

Low Sodium Pizza Sauce

Heart Healthy Treats Low Fat Low Sodium:

Ingredients:

・ 2 Tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

・ 1 heaping teaspoon garlic powder

・ 1 teaspoon onion powder

・ 1/2 cup no salt added tomato sauce

・ 2 Tablespoons no salt added tomato paste

・ 2 teaspoons dry Italian Seasoning

In sauce pan place olive oil, heat. Then add the rest of the ingredients and simmer until all the seasonings are well blended throughout the sauce. Makes between 3/4 and 1 cup pizza sauce

Portabella Pizza

Ingredients:

・ 4- Portabella mushroom caps (if you get the entire mushroom, remove stem and cut it up to use as part of the topping for the pizza.)

・ low sodium pizza sauce

・ 1/3 cup Mozzarella cheese reduced fat (made with skim milk)

・ 1/4 cup chopped onion

・ 1/4 cup green bell pepper

・ 2 to 3 ounces of ground turkey cooked

Directions:

Heart Healthy Treats Low Fat Low Sodium:

Preheat Oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Place mushrooms on baking sheet and bake for 5 minutes. Remove from oven. Spread pizza sauce on the inside of the mushroom caps, sprinkle on cheese, ground turkey, onions and peppers. Bake in oven for an additional 15 to 20 minutes or until cheese is completely melted.

Makes 4 servings of about 215 calories each.

Veggie Pita Pizza

Ingredients:

・ 1 whole wheat pita bread

・ 1/8 cup pizza sauce

・ 1/4 chopped onion

・ 1/4 cup chopped green pepper

・ 1/4 cup mushrooms

・ 1/4 cup chopped broccoli

・ 1/4 cup diced tomatoes

・ 1/3 cup reduce fat (skim milk) Mozzarella cheese

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Place pita bread on small baking pan and spread sauce over bread, Sprinkle half the cheese over sauce, add the vegetables, and then sprinkle the rest of the cheese over the top. Bake for about 15 or 20 minutes until cheese is completely melted. Cut into four pieces and enjoy!

Makes 1 personal pizza contains about 320 calories.
