Among the all time favorite American summertime desserts is strawberry shortcake.

This taste tempting and extremely delicious dessert makes the best of these beautiful in season berries. However, for those who are trying to get heart healthy and watch their sugar and fat intake this dessert can be pure poison. It doesn't have to be. With a couple of minor and healthy changes, you can turn this high fat, high in sugar dessert to one that is low fat, low in sugar, and big on taste.

Right now you are probably thinking to yourself, that there is simply no way that a low fat, low sugar strawberry shortcake is going to taste anything but boring and you couldn't be more wrong. This simple recipe almost guarantees great taste, and lesser fat and calories. And while it doesn't taste like the traditional version of the dessert it nonetheless has it's own charm and sure is to satisfy that sweet craving while still be healthy for you.

Heart Healthy Strawberry Shortcake Low Fat Low Sugar Recipe:


・ 2 1/2 cups reduced fat baking mix

・ 3/4 cups fat free skim milk

・ 1 cup strawberries cleaned and sliced

・ 1-12 ounce can low fat evaporated milk

・ 4 ounces lite vanilla yogurt

・ Fat free whipped topping thawed


Heart Healthy Strawberry Shortcake Low Fat Low Sugar Recipe:

The night before making shortcake pour the evaporated milk into the sections of an ice tray and freeze overnight.

Preheat Oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. In a large mixing bowl mix baking mix and skim milk until a soft dough forms. Turn dough onto floured surface and roll out dough about 1/2 inch thick. Using a cookie cutter or glass cut out dough circles and place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake until done (usually 8 to 10 minutes). Place biscuits on baking rack to cool.

Just before serving cut biscuits in half and place one 1/2 biscuit into 6 dessert bowls. Arrange part of the strawberries on top of each biscuit.

In blender place the milk cubes you have frozen and add the 4 ounces of lite vanilla yogurt. Mix until consistency of ice cream. Spoon the homemade ice cream over the strawberries, add more strawberries to the top of ice cream and a dollop of fat free whipped topping and serve.


Warming the strawberries in the microwave for a few seconds prior to serving will make the strawberries juicier and the warm berries against the cold ice cream taste great!

You can also use 2% milk in place of the low fat evaporated milk, however, the evaporated milk gives the “ice cream” a more creamy texture.

As you can see, this dessert is not completely fat free, but by using a number of fat free and reduced fat ingredients you can cut out more than 1/2 the fat and calories that would normally be present in this dessert.
