Your mother and grandmother may have devoted many hours to the preparation of a fruit pie but this does not mean that you have to follow in their exact culinary footsteps.
Now it is possible to enjoy the same cinnamon and apple flavor that you love but there are just a few basic steps and ingredients that are going to be involved.
When fresh apples are available you should really prepare this easy apple pie recipe and surprise your family. Although many of these traditional pies are the deep dish variety with both a top and bottom crust you should only use a bottom crust if you want to eliminate some of the fat grams.
You should use high quality, fresh spices if you really want the full flavor profile to come through. Those bottles of spices that have been sitting on your cupboard shelves for a year or more have generally lost most, if not all, their true flavors. Even though you are only using one or two types of spices this pie deserves top quality ingredients at each opportunity.
Granny Smith apples are always a popular choice as the main ingredient. A Rome apple, Gala or Jonagold will also work. The main thing to consider when choosing the apples is to select a variety that is intended for cooking or baking purposes. A Red Delicious apple is perfect for eating but it does not hold up to the high temperatures required for baking a pie. These types of apples will only result in a dessert that appears to be more ‘applesauce' in nature.
While you are considering the ingredients to use you can make this dessert a low-fat dish if you pay careful attention to the products you are setting on the counter. Here is a pie recipe that calls for just 2 tablespoons of butter-but you can use a reduced-fat butter spread if you prefer. Instead of a pie crust that is made with shortening why not try a low-fat crust that you make ‘from scratch'. If you want to reduce the amount of fat and calories a little further you can even use Splenda instead of the sugar that is listed.
Even if you follow the following steps as directed this dish is still designed to fit the needs of anyone searching for a lower-fat, dessert option.
You Will Need
1 low fat pie crust to fit a 9 inch pie plate
1/3 cup plain flour
½ cup granulated sugar and ½ cup of light brown sugar
1 teaspoon apple pie spice (or use 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon allspice and ¼ teaspoon
2 tablespoons of low fat butter spread (for baking) or use 3 tablespoons of real butter
3 tablespoons of orange juice
8 cups peeled and sliced apples (approximately 6-8 Granny Smith apples)
The kitchen oven should be preheated to 450 degrees
Put the pie crust in the oven and allow it to quickly bake for 5 minutes. Remove it from the oven and place pie plate on a trivet.
Reduce heat to 425F.
Mix spices, flour, and sugars together in a large bowl.
Add the sliced apples.
Add the orange juice.
Stir to combine and add to the pie crust.
Divide butter and place evenly along top of apple mixture.
Return pie pan to oven and let the pie bake for 45-60 minutes.
The pie crust should be golden brown in color and you should notice some juices bubbling when the pie is ready.
