Blood sugar ranges or blood glucose levels vary only slightly in normal healthy individuals.whose body produces and uses insulin effectively. However, there are over 370 million people world wide who suffer from diabetes due to the fact that either their body does not produce insulin or because their body cannot use the insulin that is produced effectively.

In these individuals their blood glucose needs to be carefully monitored or their levels of Blood Sugar Ranges out of control.

There are different tests that medical professionals use to check your Blood Sugar Ranges. These tests all check for specific type of Blood Sugars called blood glucose which come from the carbohydrates you eat.

The first test is what is called a "glucose fasting test" and is performed when a patient has not eaten for at least 8 hours. The second test is preformed 2 hour after you start eating a meal and is called a "2 hour postprandial" test. The third test is a "random glucose test" and can be performed at any time during the day.

between 80-120 after at least an 8 hour fast

160 or less after eating a meal

between 100-140 at bedtime

Even a slight elevation in these blood glucose levels can result in an increased risk of heart disease and damage to your vision. Medical personnel refer to these slight elevations as pre-diabetes and try and help patients get these levels back down to normal levels through diet and exercise.

If diet and exercise alone do not lower these glucose levels then medication is usually suggested to prevent further elevations in glucose levels and to help patients get their sugar levels under control.

When glucose levels are considered too high then a diagnosis of diabetes is given and stronger measures of control are often in order along with more careful monitoring.

Most patients who have full blown diabetes are encouraged to use a blood glucose meter and test their sugar levels at random times throughout the day and keep a record of the results so that your doctor can help decide what courses of treatment might be necessary to get your blood glucose levels under control.

Self monitoring is also used by diabetics to make sure that their blood glucose Ranges are stable and to make adjustments in what and when they eat to stay in control of their medical condition.

Making sure that your sugar levels are as close to normal as possible and stay that way will result in diabetics staying healthier for longer and being able to avoid many of the complications that are caused by this disease such as cardiovascular diseases, kidney failure, blindness, and other serious health risks.

Monitoring your glucose levels, maintaining a proper diet, and getting at least 30 minutes of exercise daily are all essential in keeping those with diabetes healthy. While there is no cure for this condition it can be controlled with dedication to your health.
