Complex carbohydrates break down slower in the body than simple carbohydrates and are less likely to spike your blood sugar levels.

2-4 servings of fruits. Serving sizes are ¼ cup of diced or canned fruit or 1 small whole fruit per serving

2-3 dairy stick to low fat cheeses and milk whenever possible. ½ cup milk is considered a serving.

Limited fats and use canola or olive oil for cooking

Protein limited to 4-6 one or 2 ounce servings. Avoid process meats whenever possible.

As well as strictly limiting the amount you eat, you also need to spread the food throughout the day. 3 small meals plus 2 snacks is usually recommended for keeping those sugar levels balanced. With the exception of fruit juices and milk all your beverages should be calorie free so that the calories you do consume are in the food as this will make you feel fuller.

It is also recommended that you eat within an hour of rising as your glucose levels will be at their lowest after a night of fasting while you sleep.
