 2012 Mayan Calendar

If these so called prophets are to be believed then the entire earth will be consumed in fireballs, hail storms and a series of cataclysmic events the likes of which no one has ever witnessed. But are these warnings based on facts what so ever?

Understanding The 2012 Mayan Calendar

Doomsday Prophets,Doomsayers,Timetable,End Of The World:

To determine whether these doomsayers are basing their warnings on the world coming to an end in 2012 on any real facts, one needs to understand a little bit about the Mayans and their culture. First, of all the Mayans were a people who existed between 250-900 AD. They were great mathematicians and also astrologers as well as a warlike people.

The so called Mayan calendar was the same type of timetable that many other people of the time used including the Aztecs. These Mayan timetables were normally based on 52 year spans which was the life time of an individual. It was thought to be a special accomplishment to live through a complete 52 year timetable rotation.

However, the Mayans did attempt to make what is known in academic circles as the long calendar and it is this timetable that the doomsayers are now claiming tells everyone when the world will end.

2012 Mayan Calendar:

The long calendar is indeed long as the Mayans covered a 5,125 year period with their long timetable which according to some scholars who have studied this timetable should run out in the year 2012.

But while the Mayan almanac is believed to run out in the year 2012 there is no indication anywhere in it or in Mayan writings that the end of this timetable means the end of the world. In fact, according to real scholars this timetable only suggests that the Mayans felt that in 2012 that there would be a transition from one world age to another.

What Does Transition From One World Age To Another Mean Exactly?

No one knows exactly what the Mayans may have meant by the transition from one world age to another meant exactly. But, most scholars are sure that they were not predicting the end of the world as they believe that the Mayans were stating that how you accepted these changes could result in peace or calamity. If they believed the world was truly going to end then why would it matter how you accepted the changes that occurred?

In many ways the world has already been through several world age transitions since the Mayan timetable was made. The world has transformed from people who lived by superstition to one that lives by logic.

We have gone from horse drawn carriages to the industrial age, and from the industrial age to the technological age. All of these things have transformed the world. So there is no reason to believe that another world age transformation spells doom and gloom for this world, this planet, or the people who occupy it.
